We cannot deny that there are many things in the world that are still mysteries to us and that we are unable to fully comprehend. Even the most powerful scientists were unable to find them. Let’s investigate one such location today that, even centuries later, is still a mystery to everyone! It is a stunning, ethereal pool, and what makes it so is that not even scientists have been able to determine its precise depth.
Bhimkund, also spelt Neelkund, is the name of the enigmatic pool. It is situated in the Madhya Pradesh village of Bajna, about 70 kilometres from the Chattarpur district. The history of this Kund takes place during the Mahabharata era, as suggested by the name. The main point of the legend surrounding this Kund is that the Pandavas were extremely thirsty when they passed through a forest during the Mahabharata era. They looked everywhere for water but were unsuccessful. Then Bhim, one of the Pandava brothers, used his mace to strike the ground and create the pool, quenching his thirst.
The pool is 40–80 metres wide and has a precise mace-shaped shape! Additionally, it is said that the water in the pool automatically rises whenever a natural disaster strikes India. Local government, foreign scientists, and the Discovery Channel reportedly tried to determine the depth of this enigmatic pool but were unsuccessful.
Foreign researchers once sent cameras as deep as 200 metres underwater to measure the pool’s depth, but they were unsuccessful. The water, on the other hand, is as holy as the water of the Ganges and never degrades.
Even though the Bundelkhand region has been experiencing water shortages since 2007, there is a hidden reservoir of gorgeous blue water there. One can see fish swimming beneath the surface of this pool’s water because it is so clear and blue. A distinctive turquoise water body in Bhimkund is about 5000 years old!
Legend has it that the mysterious Bhimkund dates all the way back to the Mahabharata period. The Pandava brothers and their wife Draupadi wandered through the thick forests during their 13 years of exile. Draupadi started to feel thirsty as he was moving. Bheem struck the ground firmly with his Gada to quench her thirst, and water began to flow from the location, which is now known as BhimKund.
It is still difficult to accept that we are unable to determine the pool’s true depth. No one has ever been able to reach the bottom of this enchanted body of water. It is thought that a group of scientists tried to measure the depth of Bheemkund once but were unsuccessful.
Another puzzling feature of the kund is that, unlike other places where people typically pass away underwater, Bhimkund experiences a different phenomenon that causes the body to float above the water’s surface. Once a body drowns in this kund, it never floats back to the surface, making it impossible to locate the body ever again.
Locals claim that Bhimkund also predicts impending natural disasters. When a natural disaster is about to occur, Bhimkund’s water level drastically changes. The water level rose by about 15 feet during the 2004 tsunami, and it did likewise during the 2015 earthquake in Nepal.
