The song Naatu Naatu from the popular Telugu film RRR became the first Indian cinema song to win an Oscar.

The super hit won Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards, knocking off heavyweights like Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

Its infectious beat and dance have captured the attention of people all around the world.

India earned a second Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film for The Elephant Whisperers.

The documentary, which chronicles the tale of a couple who care for an injured baby elephant after it becomes separated from its herd, is the category’s first Indian winner.

The Elephant Whisperers shows the intimate friendship that forms between the human and beast as they begin to dwell in the gorgeous Nilgiri highlands of southern India.

But, Naatu Naatu, a thundering tune that had people swaying to its sounds, was India’s huge triumph.

In January, the song made history by winning a Golden Globe for best original song, a first for India. It also received the Critics’ Choice award for the best song the same month.

When winning the Oscar, composer MM Keeravani claimed the song represented “the pride of every Indian”.

He stated he grew up listening to The Carpenters, an American music duet, and performed the rest of his speech to the tune of their hit song Top Of The World.

Several Indians have rushed to Twitter to express their delight at the song’s success.

N Chandrababu Naidu, a prominent politician from the two southern Indian states where Telugu is spoken, remarked on Twitter that the song had “cemented its place in history”. “This is perhaps the best time for Indian Film, and Telugus attaining it is even more unique,” he remarked.

The movie’s official Twitter handle declared the triumph a “surreal event” and dedicated it to “all our fantastic supporters throughout the world”.
